(Boise). Calling it one of the most difficult issues facing higher education in Idaho, the Idaho State Board of Education has set the tuition/fee rates for the 2010-2011 academic year as follows:

In-State/Resident Full Time Student Rates

  • University of Idaho: $5402 annual matriculation fees* or a 9.5% increase from 2009-2010
  • Boise State University: $5300 annual tuition/fees or a 9.0% increase from 2009-2010
  • Idaho State University: $5416 annual tuition/fees or a 9.0% increase from 2009-2010
  • Lewis-Clark State College: $4998 annual tuition/fees or an 8.7% increase from 2009-2010
  • Eastern Idaho Technical College: $1840 annual tuition/fees or a 5.1% increase 2009-2010

State Board of Education President Paul C. Agidius of Moscow said finding a balance between the needs of the institutions and the ability of the student to absorb additional costs weighed heavy on the minds of board members. “Students and their families, Idahoans, are struggling in this economy. Education is the life line they’re clinging to in many cases. We have to keep that access to higher education affordable.”

“I want what’s best for our students,” said Immediate Past-President Milford Terrell. “I want our students today to have better opportunities than what we had in past generations. I believe in what we are doing and I believe we are the people that have to make that happen.”

The Board also set tuition/fees for non-resident/out of state full time students for the 2010-2011 academic year as follows:

  • University of Idaho: $11,592 annual matriculation fees* or an increase of 15% from 2009-2010.
  • Boise State University: $9456 annual tuition/fees or an increase of 5.0% from 2009-2010.
  • Idaho State University: $10,500 annual tuition/fees or an increase of 7.1% from 2009-2010.
  • Lewis-Clark State College: $8908 annual tuition/fees or an increase of 8.8% from 2009-2010.
  • Eastern Idaho Technical College: $4900 annual tuition/fees or an increase of 5.1% from 2009-2010.

NOTE: *The University of Idaho is prohibited by the Idaho Constitution to charge tuition. As a result, the University of Idaho only charges matriculation fees.

The next regularly scheduled meeting for the Idaho State Board of Education is April 21-22, 2010 in Moscow at the University of Idaho.
