UI PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH COMMITTEE NARROWS THE FIELD

The University of Idaho's Presidential Screening Committee met November 12, 2003, to review and narrow the pool of applicants for the University of Idaho's presidential search. The Screening Committee received 70 applications from a number of highly qualified candidates. Jim Hammond, Vice President of the State Board of Education and Chairman of the Screening Committee said, "The Committee is very pleased with the number of impressive applications we received. Narrowing the field of candidates to only nine was a very challenging, but the Committee is convinced that we have achieved an excellent group of candidates to interview." He went on to say, "We received such high quality applications because the candidates are impressed with the beauty of our campus, the high academic quality of our programs, and the many successes achieved by the University in the area of research."

The UI Presidential Screening Committee is responsible for recruiting and screening applicants, and performing preliminary reference checks. The Committee is dedicated to the University and its role in Idaho higher education. The Committee focused its search on candidates who are outstanding leaders in the higher education arena and have extensive experience with similar or larger land grant institutions. After the first round of candidates are interviewed, a group of three to five semifinalists will come to the University in late January or early February to meet with campus groups and representatives, as well as members of the public, and visit the University's extension centers around the state. After this process, the Committee will provide a list of three or four candidates to the State Board of Education, who will ultimately make the decision as to which candidate is hired for the position. The announcement of a new president for the University of Idaho is expected in late February or early March.

To qualify, students must have a GPA of at least 3.0 or an ACT score of 20 or better and attend a participating Idaho college or university. They must be enrolled as a full time student and must be under the age of 22 prior to enrollment in the academic term of the award. The participating colleges and universities review application materials submitted by entering students to determine eligibility. To be considered for the scholarship students must complete an admission application at any of the participating schools or the statewide Common Admissions Application available at the State Board of Education's website here.

The search for a new president began this summer, after the resignation of President Robert Hoover, the 16th president in University of Idaho's history, who served as president since 1996. Mr. Gary Michael, former Chairman of the Board and CEO of Albertson's, Inc., is the Interim President.
