Finalists Named for Boise State University Presidency

The Boise State Presidential Screening Committee of the Idaho State Board of Education today announced four finalists for the position of President of Boise State University (BSU). The new president will fill the vacancy created by the departure of current BSU President, Dr. Charles Ruch, who announced his retirement in Summer 2002.

The finalists are: Dr. Guy Bailey, Dr. Brad Bartel, Dr. Robert W. Kustra and Dr. Perry D. Moore. The finalists announced today have extensive backgrounds in higher education and come from various regions of the country. Beginning next week, the four candidates will visit the BSU campus in separate visits of two days each to meet with faculty, staff, students, campus organizations and community representatives. Also included is an open forum for the public at which the candidate will make opening remarks and participate in a question and answer session.

"After an extensive selection and interview process, which included over 80 candidates, the Screening Committee believes it has found four individuals who are capable of providing the strong, dynamic leadership necessary to lead Boise State to the next level of excellence," said screening committee chair and State Board of Education member Rod Lewis. "We appreciate the efforts of the Committee in selecting the finalists. We look forward to introducing these outstanding candidates to BSU and the community."

Monday, April 7 - Dr. Robert Kustra, President, Midwestern Higher Education Commission; Former President, Eastern Kentucky University

Further background regarding the candidates is as follows:

Dr. Robert W. Kustra is currently the President of the Midwestern Higher Education Commission in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Prior to his current position, Dr. Kustra served as the president of Eastern Kentucky University. He has also served as Illinois's Lieutenant Governor, Chair of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and in the Illinois State Legislature, while at the same time holding faculty appointments at various institutions, including Northwestern University, University of Illinois, Roosevelt University and Loyola University.

Dr. Kustra received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois, a master's degree in Political Science from Southern Illinois University and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Benedictine College in Kansas.

Dr. Perry D. Moore is currently Senior Vice President and Provost at Wright State University, a doctoral institution of 16,000 students in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Moore has been with Wright State University since 1974, where he is also a Professor of Political Science and Urban Affairs. Additionally, he has served as Director of the Applied Behavioral Sciences Graduate Program, Chair of the Department of Political Science, and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Moore held the position of Provost for a period of 4 years prior to also being appointed Senior Vice President of the institution in 2002.

Dr. Moore received his Ph.D. in Government (Public Administration, Public Law and American Politics) from the University of Texas at Austin. He received his master's degree in Government and his bachelor's degree in Government and History from Midwestern State University, also in Texas.

Dr. Brad Bartel is currently Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. Prior to his current position, Dr. Bartel served as Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Research at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and Associate Dean of the Graduate Division and Research at San Diego State University, where he taught in the Anthropology Department for 16 years.

Dr. Bartel received his Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Missouri. He received his bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Brooklyn College (CUNY).

Dr. Guy Bailey is currently Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). Prior to his current position, Dr. Bailey served as the Dean of Graduate Studies and Associate Vice President for Research of UTSA. Additionally, he has held academic and administrative positions at the University of Nevada Las Vegas (Dean of Liberal Arts), the University of Memphis (Professor and Department Chair), Oklahoma State University (Professor and Department Chair) and Texas A& M University.

Dr. Bailey received his Ph.D. in English Linguistics from the University of Tennessee. He received his master's and bachelor's degrees from the University of Alabama, in the areas of English and History.
