BOARD ACCEPTING ROBERT C. BYRD SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS

BOISE -- The Idaho State Board of Education is now accepting applications for the federal Robert C. Byrd scholarship for graduating high school seniors, and recent Idaho high school graduates for the upcoming 2004 to 2005 academic year.

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a federally funded, state administered scholarship that recognizes exceptional high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in the postsecondary educational system. Pending annual federal approval, the award is $1,500 per year, renewable for up to 4 years. Applications must be postmarked by April 19, 2004.

To qualify, students must be a current graduating senior of an Idaho high school or have the equivalent of a certificate of graduation recognized by the state of Idaho and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued academic success. Students are selected on the basis of grade point average, standardized test scores, and faculty ratings. Recipients may attend any accredited public or private nonprofit institution of higher education, proprietary institution of higher education, or postsecondary vocational institution, as defined in section 481 of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended.
