TWIN FALLS - The Idaho State Board of Education will hold its meetings August 12 and 13, at the College of Southern Idaho.
State Board meetings begin at 8 a.m. and will be held in the Rick Allen Community Room at the Herrett Center. Thursday, the Board will hold an executive session first and then proceed with the items on the agenda. A list of agenda highlights is included below:
Committee on Mentoring: The Board will hear an update on its committee on mentoring that was developed at the request of the House Education Committee. A committee, made up of stakeholders in Idaho education, is meeting to look at the history, funding and effectiveness of present mentoring programs.
Alcohol waiver for Boise State University and University of Idaho home football games: The State Board recently adopted a comprehensive alcohol policy that requires a permit and liability insurance and would allow college and university presidents to determine when alcohol is appropriate on campus. The policy did not allow for alcohol to be served at student athletic events. BSU and UI are asking the Board to waive the policy so they can serve alcohol in a controlled environment as part of pre-game festivities at all home football games.
Public Charter School Rules: The State Board will consider new rules that apply to public charter schools. On April 1, Governor Dirk Kempthorne signed legislation that required the State Board to adopt rules establishing a consistent application and review process for the approval and maintenance of all public charter schools.
Renaissance Charter School: The State Board of Education will consider an appeal filed by Renaissance Charter School after its charter was revoked by the Moscow School District in May. The State Board attorneys held a public hearing to gather information about the appeal in July. According to the law, the State Board has three options: reverse the decision of the school district, if the State Board determines that the Moscow School District failed to appropriately consider or acted in an arbitrary manner in revoking the charter; remand the matter back to the Moscow School District for further review; or redirect it to the Public Charter School Commission.
