STATE BOARD MEETS IN LEWISTON THURSDAY

LEWISTON - The Idaho State Board of Education will hold its meeting Thursday, October 21 at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston.

The State Board meeting begins at 8 a.m. and will be held at the Williams Conference Center. The Board will hold an executive session Wednesday evening beginning at 6 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel in Lewiston. A list of Thursday’s agenda highlights is included below:

Accelerated Learning through Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment: The Board will discuss the current status of accelerated learning programs in our high schools. The Board is interested in providing greater opportunities to academically challenge our high school students while helping them transition from high school to college.

Third Academic Indicator: The Board will evaluate an additional option for the third academic indicator under No Child Left Behind by including the language usage Idaho Standards Achievement Test (ISAT).

Lake Pend Oreille School District Split: In April, the Board rejected a proposal to split the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Proponents of the split asked the Board to reconsider and a hearing was held in August to gather information. The Board must approve a motion to reconsider the split in order for the issue to be discussed.

Liberty Charter School: The charter school is appealing the Nampa School District’s actions in respect to its charter. Liberty Charter School and the Nampa School District have expressed a desire to transfer the school’s oversight to the Charter School Commission.

Charter School Commission Update: The Board will receive an update on the Charter School Commission by Chairman Jim Hammond. The Board will also honor Hammond for his 5 years of service on the State Board of Education.

University Place Idaho Falls Land Purchase: At its August meeting, the Board approved Idaho State University’s proposal to purchase land and buildings at the University Place complex in Idaho Falls. ISU is now requesting authorization to issue approximately $4.5 million in bonds to finance the land purchase.

University of Idaho Railroad Land Exchange: The University of Idaho is asking for Board approval to acquire 10 acres of railroad property in Moscow in exchange for 5 acres of UI property in Moscow to enhance a greenbelt bordering the campus.

University of Idaho Fraternity House: The UI is also requesting permission to purchase a former fraternity house on campus for $400,102. The purchase is required by a 1962 agreement.

FY 2006 Budget Request Revisions: At the August 2004 meeting, the Board approved agency and institution budget requests to forward to the Division of Financial Management (DFM) and Legislative Services Office (LSO). Since that time there have been several revisions and additions to budget requests. The Board will review the changes.
