POCATELLO – The State Board of Education is pleased to announce 15 Idaho schools have been named Distinguished Schools and another 74 schools are being recognized for Additional Yearly Growth.
Awards were based on spring 2003 and 2004 Idaho Standards Achievement Tests (ISAT) results and are required under “No Child Left Behind” legislation. To be named a Distinguished School, a school was in the top 5 percent of schools that closed an achievement gap between specific groups of students. This year, the Distinguished Schools for 2004 showed a reduction in the gap between the economically disadvantaged and non-economically disadvantaged subgroups.
To be eligible for the Additional Yearly Growth Award, a school must have increased the percent of proficient or advanced students by at least 10 percent in either reading or math.
“Many of our schools are experiencing tremendous growth in student achievement,” said State Board of Education President Rod Lewis. “These awards are meant to highlight schools that are closing achievement gaps and increasing student proficiency. On behalf of the State Board, we congratulate our teachers and students for their hard work in achieving these goals.”
“I am pleased we have an opportunity to recognize some of the many success stories in our schools with these rewards,” said Dr. Marilyn Howard, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I hope in the future we can expand this program to honor more schools that are performing well.”
