STATE BOARD MEETS THURSDAY IN BOISE

BOISE - The State Board of Education will hold its meeting on Thursday, February 23 beginning at 8 a.m. in the Jordan Ballroom at Boise State University.

The Board will review K-12 issues as well as academic and financial requests from Idaho's colleges and universities. Highlights of the agenda include:

Head football coach for University of Idaho: The UI will present Dennis Erickson as the Vandals' new head football coach for Board approval.

Boise State University : BSU will propose approval for two new graduate programs - a Ph.D. in geosciences and an Executive Master of Business Administration degree. Because the Board is meeting on the BSU campus, Dr. Bob Kustra will also provide BSU's annual update to the State Board.

Idaho PLATO Learning Network (I-PLN): The Board created the Idaho PLATO Learning Network in June 2004 to increase student achievement. Using $5 million in federal funding, I-PLN provides unlimited academic computer software for participating Idaho school districts. The Board will receive an update on the program, including the number of school districts who are participating.

Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind (ISDB) Committee Recommendations: In July 2005, the Board organized a committee to examine education programs in Idaho for the deaf/hard of hearing and blind/visually impaired students in Idaho. The committee created a series of recommendations to improve education of deaf and blind students. The Board received the report at its December meeting, but will review the recommendations at this Board meeting.
