SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

BOISE — Idaho high school seniors looking for scholarships can now apply on-line utilizing the State Board of Education’s website: http://www.boardofed.idaho.gov/scholarships.

The new on-line process allows students to quickly apply for all scholarships in one application utilizing the internet. Students can apply for the Robert Lee Promise Category A Scholarship, Robert Byrd Honors Scholarship, Governor's Challenge Scholarship, and the Tschudy Family Scholarship on the Board’s website. The deadline for scholarship applications is January 15, 2007.

Below is a description of the scholarships available:

Robert R. Lee Idaho Promise Category A Scholarship

The Robert R. Lee Promise Category A Scholarship provides up to $3,000 per year, is renewable annually and is available for a limited number of qualified students pursuing either academic or professional-technical programs. To be eligible for the Idaho Promise Category A Scholarship, an individual must be a resident of Idaho, be a current graduating senior of an Idaho high school, and enroll in the fall 2007 semester as a full-time student at an eligible Idaho college or university. Applicants for academic programs must be in the top 10 percent of their graduating class with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better and an ACT score of 28 or above. Applicants enrolling in professional-technical programs must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher and take the Compass or ACT exam.

Governor’s Challenge Scholarship

The Governor’s Challenge Scholarship provides annual scholarships to Idaho students who demonstrate a strong commitment to public service and leadership. To qualify, a student must be a resident of Idaho and a current graduating senior of an Idaho high school. Additionally, an applicant must enroll full-time in the fall 2007 semester in an academic or professional-technical program at a participating Idaho college or university and have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above. Academic applicants must take the ACT or SAT.

Schools participating in the Robert R. Lee Promise Scholarships and the Governor’s Challenge Scholarship include: Boise State University, Idaho State University, University of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State College, College of Southern Idaho, North Idaho College, Eastern Idaho Technical College, Albertson College of Idaho, BYU-Idaho, and Northwest Nazarene University.

Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship is a federally funded, state administered scholarship that recognizes exceptional high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in the postsecondary educational system. The award is $1,500 per year, renewable for up to four years.

To qualify, students must be a current graduating senior of an Idaho high school or have the equivalent of a certificate of graduation recognized by the state of Idaho and have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and show promise of continued academic success. Students are selected on the basis of grade point average, class ranking and national test scores. Recipients may attend any accredited public or private nonprofit institution of higher education, proprietary institution of higher education, or postsecondary vocational institution.

Robert E. Lee Idaho Promise Category B Scholarship

Students can automatically receive the Robert R. Lee Promise Category B Scholarship if they meet minimal qualifications. If a student attends an Idaho institution, the scholarship will be automatically added to the student’s account at the participating institution; students do not need to apply online. The scholarship will provide up to $250 per semester for the 2007-2008 academic year. Institutional matches may be available at some schools. The Robert R. Lee Promise Category B Scholarship is limited to four semesters and to first-time freshmen students who are younger than 22 years of age as of July 1 of the year in which they are applying. Students must successfully complete at least 12 credits per semester and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA to remain eligible for the scholarship.
