NAMPA— The College of Western Idaho is official. Idaho State Board of Education President Milford Terrell administered the oath of office to the five individuals selected earlier this month to serve as trustees. Jerry Hess and M.C. Niland of Nampa along with Hatch Barrett, Mark Dunham and Guy Hurlbutt of Boise comprise the now official board of trustees.
In its first official action, the Board of Trustees of the College of Western Idaho elected Jerry Hess to serve as Board President, Mark Dunham as Vice-President and M.C.Niland to serve as interim Secretary-Treasurer. The Trustees placed the interim tag on the secretary appointment because they want the option of possibly appointing a person to serve as Board Secretary-Treasurer who is not a board member later on, once staff is hired. Idaho Code provides such an option for local community college boards of trustees.
Board President Hess also appointed Hatch Barrett and M.C.Niland to co-chair a subcommittee to establish a Community Advisory Board for The College of Western Idaho. "I think it’s paramount to have this board reflect all areas and peoples of our communities," said Hess. "This is a community college and community is the key word. Let’s make sure our community as a whole is here at the table."
The CWI Board also established that they will hold a regular monthly meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:00am starting in September 2007. The Trustees did schedule a special meeting for Tuesday, August 7th, 9:00am. "We have an awful lot of work to do and we simply can’t wait until the 3rd week of August, let alone September," said Board Vice-President Mark Dunham.
Board members also were given a presentation by budget analysts from The Department of Financial Management and Legislative Services. The presentation focused on community college revenue streams and budget deadlines and timelines. All state agency fiscal year 2009 budgets are due to The Department of Financial Management by September 1, 2007.
