BOISE— The Idaho State Board of Education today took the first step in approving math standards that will ultimately determine whether Idaho high school students graduate. The Board, in a special meeting, voted unanimously to give preliminary approval to IDAPA 08.02.03.004, which will set graduation content standards for Algebra 1, Geometry and other related mathematical fields. The public will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed rule before the Board takes its final vote later this year. If the vote is to approve the rule, the State Department of Education would then take the rule to the Idaho Legislature for final approval before it becomes part of the high school graduation requirement.
The 2007 Idaho Legislature approved new high school graduation reform, requiring all Idaho high school graduates, starting with the class of 2013, to successfully pass six credits each of math and science, which is essentially three school years.
The Board approved a line item in the fiscal year 2009 budget for the Idaho Commission for Libraries. The Commission for Libraries is one of thirteen agencies over which the Idaho State Board of Education has management and oversight authority.
The Board also adopted a Cumulative Science Document. The document clarifies science test standards for grades 5-7-10.
