ELECTS 09-10 OFFICERS, APPOINTS MEMBERS TO PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS COMMISSION & STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

(Moscow). The Idaho State Board of Education has completed its work on the April 16-17, 2009 agenda. Among the items acted upon by the Board:

  • Formation of a Board committee who will develop an implementation plan in conjunction with key stakeholders that best serves the current and future needs of medical education in the state of Idaho.
  • Approval of institution and agency strategic plans for the 2010-2014 time period with the directive to bring updated plans to the Board for approval as requested.
  • Appointment of Jim Johnston of Pocatello to fill the Region 6 vacancy on the Idaho State Historical Society Board.
  • Appointments to the Professional Standards Commission:
  • Glenn Orthel, Division of Professional-Technical Education (renomination)
Anne Ritter, Meridian Joint School District (renomination)
Cathy Bierne, Coeur d’Alene School District (renomination)
    Kelly Gillie, Lapwai School District
Kathleen Davis, St. Maries School District
    Madonna Smith, Meridian School District

Esther Henry, Jefferson County School District
Lourene Wellman, Jefferson County School District
Connie Carpenter Prow, Bruneau-Grand View School District

The Board also elected officers for 2009-2010. Paul Agidius of Moscow will serve as Board President, Richard Westerberg of Preston will serve as Vice-President and Ken Edmunds of Twin Falls will serve as Secretary. Board officers serve from April to April. Agidius takes over for Milford Terrell who served as president from 2007-2009.

The Board also heard a presentation on proposed program closures at the University of Idaho. All of the proposed closures only require approval of the Board’s executive director as they do not exceed a fiscal impact to the university in excess of $250,000 each. Program closures or modifications that exceed a fiscal impact of $250,000 must have Board approval. The presentation was an information item only and did seek board action.

Don Soltman of Coeur d’Alene was welcomed as the newest member of the State Board. Mr. Soltman was appointed by Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter in March and was confirmed unanimously by the Idaho Senate on April 10, 2009.

The Board’s next regularly scheduled meeting is set for June 18-19, 2009 on the campus of North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene. The Board will hold its annual retreat and presidential evaluations meeting in Boise on May 21-22, 2009.
